California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) Congratulates Endorsed Candidates, Looks to General Election

Oakland & Los Angeles, Calif.  (June 8, 2016) – As the dust settles from the California Primary Election, California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) – the non-partisan political action arm of the environmental movement in California – congratulates the candidates who had earned its endorsement in the Primary Election and will continue to the General Election in November.

“It was quite an election night for the environment in California with a number of big victories for our endorsed candidates,” said CLCV CEO Sarah Rose. “The vast majority of our candidates had very strong primary finishes and will move forward to the General Election, including candidates in tough races like Mariko Yamada in Senate District 3, Jim Beall in Senate District 15, Henry Stern in Senate District 27, Laura Friedman in Assembly District 43, and Eloise Gomez Reyes in Assembly Districts 47, among many others. We’re also thrilled with the passage of Measure AA for a clean and healthy San Francisco Bay – the measure required a two-thirds majority and residents of the nine-county Bay Area gave it the support it needed.”

“There were, as always, some Election Day disappointments. This election season has featured very early and significant engagement from the oil industry in ways we have not seen in past elections,” continued Rose. “As a result, environmental champions like Dan Wolk in Assembly District 4 and Bryan Urias in Assembly District 48 placed third in their races, which effectively eliminates them from the General Election run-off.”

“It's worth noting that this is the first election where California allowed mailed ballots to be postmarked on Election Day, so for some of these races the late absentee ballots, Election Day voting by mail, and provisional ballots may change the outcome,” said Rose. “Looking ahead to November, it is clear we must continue our work to elect strong leaders who will stand up to big polluters and represent the strong environmental values of their communities.”
